Claim: A photo circulating on social media shows renowned religious scholar Maulana Tariq Jamil critically injured in a traffic accident.

Fact: Maulana Yousaf Jamil, the son of the scholar, has clarified that Maulana Tariq is fine and has not been injured in an accident. In fact, the viral photo shows another cleric, Maulana Azad Jameel, wounded in a car crash in 2019.

Fact or Fiction?

On 21 March 2024, Facebook user Ajmal Hussain Sahi posted (archive) a photo claiming that it shows Islamic scholar Maulana Tariq Jamil who has been seriously injured in a road accident.

The tweet reads,

*معروف عالم دین مولانا طارق جمیل روڈ ایکسیڈنٹ میں شدید زخمی ہوگئے ہیں*

[Well known religious scholar Maulana Tariq Jamil has been seriously injured in a road accident*]”

The photo depicts a man lying on a hospital bed in bloodied clothes, wearing a black coat over a kurta shalwar, while doctors can be seen treating him.

Upon closer examination, Soch Fact Check discovered that the individual in the photo does not resemble Tariq’s facial features. We conducted a search using the keywords “مذہبی اسکالر روڈ ایکسیڈنٹ” on Facebook and found a post from 30 May 2019 on Maulana Azad Jameel’s official Facebook page. The caption indicates that he sustained injuries in a road accident at that time.

Maulana Azad is also an Islamic cleric. He has been featured on televised Ramadan transmissions, including appearances on Bol News and Express News.

Maulana Yousaf Jamil, the son of Maulana Tariq Jamil, issued a video statement on Facebook on 21 March 2024, affirming his father’s safety and well-being, refuting any claims of him being in any accident. He denounced the news circulating on social media as baseless and false.

The photo has been linked to Maulana Tariq and his son in the past. It has circulated online multiple times, with posts dating back to 2019, 2021 and 2023. The posts that surfaced on social media in November 2021 about Maulana Tariq’s accident were refuted by the scholar via Facebook and were also debunked by MM News at the time. Moreover, a similar claim regarding Maulana Yousaf being injured was fact-checked by Soch Fact Check in January 2023.

In December 2022, Maulana Tariq suffered a heart attack in Canada and received treatment at a hospital there. He was discharged later. In 2020, Maulana Tariq Jamil sustained injuries from a fall due to blood pressure issues.
