Claim: The federal government has decided to impose a countrywide “smart lockdown” on Saturdays and Sundays because regional tensions are disrupting fuel supplies.
Fact: The claim is false. Although news reports said the government was considering different fuel-conservation measures, official channels did not announce any approved nationwide weekend smart lockdown. The Ministry of Information later debunked the viral weekend lockdown alert while government press releases said petroleum supplies remained stable.
On 30 March 2026, an Instagram post by ARY News claimed that the government had decided to impose a countrywide “smart lockdown” on weekends. The caption stated that the proposal had been finalized and would come into force after the approval of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The graphic in the post read: “Govt decides to impose countrywide smart Lockdown.”
Fact or Fiction
Soch Fact Check reviewed the viral claim and examined whether Pakistani authorities had officially announced a countrywide weekend “smart lockdown.” A keyword search showed that the claim was circulating on Instagram and Facebook in posts alleging that the federal government had decided to impose restrictions on Saturdays and Sundays because of fuel supply concerns. However, we found no official notification from the federal government announcing any approved nationwide smart lockdown on weekends.
Express Tribune reported that authorities were considering various fuel-conservation measures amid regional tensions and supply concerns. Dawn’s coverage referred to the possibility of a “smart lockdown” as one of several options under discussion. However, consideration of such measures is not the same as a formal government decision or notification announcing that a countrywide weekend lockdown had been imposed.
We then reviewed the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting’s fact-checking account, @FactCheckerMoIB, which shared the viral notification being circulated on social media with the word “fake” stamped across it and urged the public to rely only on verified sources. Separately, Dawn reported that although contingency measures discussed by officials included possible lockdowns and fuel rationing, no official confirmation had been made regarding any such plan.
Given the absence of any official announcement, the fact that news reports referred only to proposals under consideration, and the government’s refutation of the viral alert, Soch Fact Check rates the claim as false.
