Claim: A viral video shows a woman being beaten with sticks by a group of men in Pakistan.
Fact: The video is actually from Kamarhati in West Bengal, India, and its earliest instance is from July 2024.
On 16 July 2025, a user on Facebook shared a video that allegedly showed a group of men beating a woman with sticks. In the caption, the user appealed to the Chief Minister of Punjab Maryam Nawaz to take action against this crime:
This reads as follows in English:
“According to sources, a video of a woman being beaten is being seen, so this evidence is enough for the law to take action.
Whether that woman is someone’s daughter, mother or sister, her honor and life are as valuable as those of a powerful figure.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz should take notice of this and take practical steps for women’s rights, justice, and police reforms. If the abuse is really visible in this video, then this is an opportunity for her to set an example of justice by taking practical steps instead of calling herself a “mother” or a “daughter of the nation”.”
Fact or Fiction?
To verify if this video was indeed from Punjab or anywhere else in Pakistan, Soch Fact Check conducted a reverse-image search of its keyframes. The earliest instance of this video that we found was on X (formerly Twitter) from 8 July 2024. The post claimed it showed an instance of brutality in Kamarhati. Searching for this location online, we found that Kamarhati is a city in the province of West Bengal, India. We also found a number of Indian news articles from India Today, Deccan Chronicle, Outlook, The Free Press Journal, and Patiala Politics that confirmed the location in the video to be Kamarhati, West Bengal.
According to these sources, the video was shared online by members of India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In response, the Trinamool Congress (TMC)—the ruling party in West Bengal—claimed that this was simply an effort by the BJP to defame the state.
At the time, the TMC also claimed that the video was from 2021. However, despite keyword searches for “Woman beaten sticks 2021 India”, “Woman beaten sticks 2021 Kamarhati Bengal”, and reverse-image searches of the video, Soch Fact Check did not find credible evidence to support this claim.
Through our initial reverse-image search, we also found recent social media posts from July 2025 claiming that the incident took place in Bangladesh.
Hence, while this video does show a group of men beating a woman with sticks, this incident did not take place in Pakistan or Bangladesh.
