Several Twitter users falsely shared images of Hoover Dam as Mohmand Dam

This image went viral with a captain thanking Imran Khan

Claim: An image shows the Mohmand Dam, one of Imran Khan’s greatest achievements, now in its last stage of construction. Next year this Dam will produce 1700 megawatts of electricity.

Fact: This is false; the image actually shows the Hoover Dam in the United States of America.

On 13 June 2023, several Twitter users shared an image with the caption claiming that this is the Mohmand dam in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, one of the greatest achievements of Imran Khan, former Prime Minister of Pakistan.

The following image was captioned:

عمران خان کی عظیم کارناموں میں سے ایک شاندار کارنامہ مہمند ڈیم ماشاءاللہ کام آخری مرحلے میں داخل آئندہ سال 1700 میگاواٹ سستی بجلی سسٹم میں داخل ہوگئی انشااللہ

[Translation: One of the great achievements of Imran Khan Mohmand Dam, Masha Allah, has entered the final stage, and next year, 1700 MW of cheap electricity will enter the system. Inshallah]

Fact or Fiction?

Through Google Reverse Image Search, we found that this image actually shows the Hoover Dam in the United States of America. The same image was shared 20 weeks ago by an Instagram account with the caption, “The construction of Hoover dam Bridge Bypass Arizona Nevada, Las Vegas, USA.”

The same image was also shared on Pinterest in August 2011 with the caption “National Landmark in Arizona & Nevada, the Hoover Dam and National Recreation Area, Lake Mead.”

The viral tweets here and here were viewed more than 79,100 times and received over 4,160 interactions on Twitter.

Conclusion: An image of the Hoover Dam in the USA was falsely shared as the Mohmand Dam in Pakistan.
