Claim: The State Bank of Pakistan issued a notification discontinuing the Rs 10 banknote from 1 September 2026.
Fact: The Rs 10 banknote remains legal tender in Pakistan. SBP still lists it as current legal tender, and Soch Fact Check found no official notice withdrawing it from 1 September 2026.
On 30 August 2026, Facebook user Dilawar Ali shared a post claiming that the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) had issued a notification discontinuing the Rs 10 banknote from 1 September.
The Urdu text in the post stated, “اسٹیٹ بینک نے یکم ستمبر سے دس روپے کا کرنسی نوٹ بند کرنے کا نوٹیفکیشن جاری کر دیا۔”

It translates to, “The State Bank has issued a notification discontinuing the Rs 10 currency note from 1 September.”
However, Soch Fact Check found the claim is false.
SBP’s Proposal
The claim circulated amid reports about SBP’s plans for Pakistan’s new banknote series.
An official Senate press release confirms that the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue met on 25 August 2026 and received a briefing from an SBP deputy governor about the proposed banknote series. It states that introducing the new notes could take approximately one year. However, the press release does not mention the Rs 10 denomination.
Reports about the Rs 10 banknote attributed the information to SBP Deputy Governor Dr Inayat Hussain. Aaj News reported that SBP had proposed discontinuing the note because of its production cost. Business Recorder reported that the central bank was considering discontinuing it and added that a Senate Secretariat official had confirmed the development. ARY News described it as a recommendation and reported that the federal cabinet would make the final decision about denominations in the new series.
SBP’s January 2024 press release states that the designs for the new banknote series require federal government approval. It also says the existing series will remain in circulation after the new notes are introduced and will be withdrawn gradually once sufficient quantities of the new notes are available.
Fact or Fiction?
SBP’s official Rupay ko Pehchano portal lists the Rs 10 banknote under “Current Legal Tender”. As of 1 September 2026, it remained among the denominations recognised as legal tender across Pakistan. Soch Fact Check also reviewed SBP’s published circulars and found no notification stating that the current Rs 10 banknote would cease to be legal tender from 1 September.
Under section 25 of the State Bank of Pakistan Act, 1956, a banknote series ceases to be legal tender after the federal government, on the recommendation of the SBP Board, issues a notification in the official Gazette specifying the date from which it will no longer be valid.
Previous SBP notices show how such withdrawals are announced. In 2015, the central bank said banks would stop reissuing old-design Rs 10 and Rs 100 notes but clarified that those already in circulation would remain legal tender. A subsequent SBP circular stated that old-design Rs 10, Rs 50, Rs 100, and Rs 1,000 notes would cease to be legal tender from 1 December 2016 following a federal government Gazette notification. Soch Fact Check found no such notification withdrawing the current Rs 10 banknote from 1 September 2026.
Virality
At the time of review, Dilawar Ali’s Facebook post had 880 reactions, 42 comments, and 49 shares. Soch Fact Check found at least 14 other posts carrying the claim on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads in late August 2026. The claim appeared on public pages, personal accounts, Facebook groups, and video posts, often using identical Urdu wording.
Conclusion: The claim is false. SBP has not issued a notification discontinuing the Rs 10 banknote from 1 September 2026. Although the central bank has reportedly proposed phasing out the banknote in the future, it remains legal tender in Pakistan.
