Claim: Chief Minister of Punjab Maryam Nawaz announced that the Punjab government will provide 100,000 free electric bikes to female students and women.
Fact: The CM announced that 100,000 bikes have been allocated for both male and female students. She added that while male students must make a down payment and pay the registration fee, along with monthly instalments, the Government of Punjab would cover the down payment and registration fee for female students. The bikes are, therefore, subsidised, and not free even for girls. Moreover, the scheme is meant for students only, not the general population of women across Punjab.
Following a speech by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on 16 July 2026, social media users shared graphics, images, and reels claiming that the Punjab government would provide 100,000 electric bikes free of charge to female students. Some versions extended the allocation to women generally.
One Facebook post carried an image of the chief minister alongside another showing girls in uniform riding electric bikes. The text in the image claimed: “100,000 Free Electric Bikes for Female Students and Women.”
The accompanying caption, however, claimed that 100,000 female students will receive e-bikes under a “fully subsidised scheme”.

The posts circulated after the Punjab chief minister addressed a ceremony in Arifwala on 16 July 2026, where she inaugurated Sahiwal division’s first Nawaz Sharif School of Eminence. The Punjab government and the Punjab Education Foundation described the event as the inauguration of 10 Nawaz Sharif Schools of Eminence for Sahiwal division.

Fact or Fiction?
For verification, Soch Fact Check conducted keyword searches and reviewed the chief minister’s speech and the payment terms of the scheme which were published by the Punjab government.
In a video of the speech, uploaded by Geo News, the relevant remarks appear from 4:50 to 5:27. The chief minister said:
“آپ کو اگر الیکٹرک بائیک چاہیے تو آپ کو الیکٹرک بائیک ملے گی، ان شاء اللہ تعالیٰ۔ اس سال ہم اسٹوڈنٹس کو ایک لاکھ الیکٹرک بائیکس دینے جا رہے ہیں، فری! لڑکوں کو صرف ڈاؤن پیمنٹ پندرہ ہزار کرنی پڑے گی، اور اس کے بعد ان کی دو ہزار مہینہ کے قریب قسط ہوگی۔ تو انہوں نے کہا کہ لڑکیوں کے لیے بھی یہ ہے، سوری بوائز۔ تو میں نے کہا کہ لڑکیوں کو وہ پندرہ ہزار بھی نہیں دینا۔ ان کو وہ مل جائے گی بائیک، بغیر کوئی ڈاؤن پیمنٹ کیے ہوئے۔”
[Translation: “If you want an electric bike, you will get an electric bike, God willing. This year, we are going to give students 100,000 electric bikes. Free! Boys will only have to make a down payment of Rs 15,000, followed by a monthly instalment of approximately Rs 2,000. Then they asked if this was for girls as well. Sorry, boys. So I said that girls would not have to pay even that Rs 15,000. They would receive the bike without making any down payment.”]
Although the chief minister used the word “free”, she immediately described a down payment and monthly instalments for male students. When discussing female students, she specifically said they would receive the bikes without a down payment. Her remarks did not announce an exemption from monthly instalments.
Soch Fact Check then found that the payment terms of the scheme had already been published before the Arifwala speech, which mostly reiterated the terms announced by Nawaz in her 16 July speech.
On 30 June 2026, the Punjab government’s Directorate General Public Relations announced that the government would subsidise each bike by Rs 70,000. Male students would make a down payment of Rs 14,000 and pay interest-free monthly instalments of Rs 2,100. The government would cover the down payment and registration fee for female students, but they would still pay monthly instalments of Rs 2,100.
However, the figures in Nawaz’s speech were slightly different from the ones published by the Punjab government. She cited a down payment of Rs 15,000 and a monthly instalment of approximately Rs 2,000, while the official announcement listed Rs 14,000 and Rs 2,100, respectively.
The announcement published on the website separately stated that government employees would also be eligible to obtain e-bikes on easy instalments.
Some versions of the claim also said the scheme applies to female students and “women”. However, our investigation revealed that the allocation of 100,000 bikes is specifically for students and does not extend to the general population of women across Punjab.
Dawn reported the same payment terms on 1 July 2026. It stated that the 100,000 electric bikes would be provided to students through an interest-free instalment scheme and that female students would still pay Rs 2,100 per month.
The available evidence shows that the 100,000-bike allocation is for male and female students. Although female students are exempt from the down payment and registration fee, they must still pay monthly instalments of Rs 2,100. Posts describing the bikes as free for students, female students, or women generally are, therefore, misleading.
Virality
Soch Fact Check found at least 29 posts carrying the claim, including 21 on Facebook, five on Instagram, and three on X (formerly Twitter).
At the time of writing, the Facebook posts for which engagement figures were visible had collectively received approximately 4,300 reactions, 746 comments, and at least 169 shares.
Four Instagram posts had collectively received approximately 31,200 likes, 2,280 comments, and 543 shares.
Geo News also repeated the claim in a Facebook post and an article, stating that students would receive 100,000 “free” electric bikes.
Across social media platforms, the posts either described all 100,000 electric bikes as free for women or free for students in general.
Conclusion: The claim that CM Punjab Maryam Nawaz announced female students will receive “free” electric bikes is misleading. In fact, the chief minister announced that the government will cover the down payment and registration fee for female students, but they must still pay monthly instalments of Rs2,100.
