Claim: Imran Khan said that you can’t take his name on television because that would mean stripping Asim Munir’s father.

Fact: Imran Khan did not make a statement about COAS Asim Munir’s father

On 1 June 2023, a video went viral on Twitter, claiming that Imran Khan made a derogatory comment about Chief of the Army Staff, Asim Munir’s father.

The tweet was captioned:

میڈیا پر آپ عمران کا نام نہیں لے سکتے کیونکہ عاصم منیر کے والد کی ستر ننگی ہوتی ہے،

عمران نیازی

[Translation: You can’t take Imran Khan’s name on television media because if you so, that would mean stripping Asim Munir’s father]

Fact or Fiction?

Soch Fact Check decided to take a closer look at the video to gauge whether Khan actually made a comment about General Asim Munir’s father. Through close listening and by reverse image searching the keyframes of the video on Google Image Search, we discovered that the phrase “Qasim ka jo walid hai” [Qasim’s father] was being confused for “Asim ka jo walid hai” [COAS Asim Munir’s father].

Khan’s actual statement was:

Kiunke media per ap Imran Khan nahin keh saktay. Tou Qasim ka jo walid hai uski sattar (70) fi sad maqbooliat ho gayi hai. Ye unhone kiya hai TV pe ab Imran Khan ka naam bhi nahin asakta.

[Translation: Now you can’t say Imran Khan on national media. So Qasim’s father has reached 70% popularity. This is what they have done that you can’t even take Imran Khan’s name in the media.]

We found several videos with a similar statement in the description or the title of the video here, here, and here.

This video reached 605,500 views on Twitter and more than 1200 interactions.

We also found posts echoing the claim here, here, and here.

Conclusion: Imran Khan did not make a derogatory comment about COAS Asim Munir’s father.
