Claim: Dua Lipa wore a Pakistani cricket team jersey to show her support during the Asia Cup 2025.

Fact: The image has been edited. In the original image, the pop star wore a white T-shirt and not the Pakistan cricket team’s jersey.

On 13 September, a Facebook user uploaded a photo (archive) that shows pop singer Dua Lipa wearing a green jersey in support of the Pakistani cricket team.

The description of the post says: “Dua Lipa shows her support for Pakistan Cricket Team in the ongoing Asia Cup #PakistanCricket | #AsiaCup2025”.

Asia Cup 2025

On 14 September, Pakistan’s cricket team suffered defeat against India during the Asia Cup 2025.

The match was marred by controversy, as the Indian team did not shake hands with Pakistani players — a post-match good sportsmanship ritual in cricket — after the game ended.

India’s cricket team captain Suryakumar Yadav said that their team’s decision not to shake hands with their Pakistani opponents after the match was a sign of protest, according to Al Jazeera’s report. As a “follow-on effect” of the Indian team’s actions, Pakistan’s captain did not speak at the post-match chat with the host broadcaster. This hostile exchange between the two cricket teams comes after the neighbouring countries engaged in extensive four-day military conflict in May 2025.

The conflict was triggered by the killing of at least 26 people by gunmen at a resort in Pahalgam, in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, on 22 April. India blamed Pakistan for the attack, a claim which Pakistan has denied. Following this incident, India launched missiles on what it claimed were “terrorist bases” in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and some sites in the Punjab province on 7 May.

The Indian captain was reportedly asked if his actions were against sportsman’s spirit, to which he replied saying, “A few things in life are above sportsman’s spirit,” adding that, “We stand with all the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack and with their families, and dedicate this win to our brave armed forces who took part in Operation Sindoor.”

Fact or Fiction?

Soch Fact Check reverse-searched the image and found that it has been altered.

The News, in its article titled “Dua Lipa sends Pakistani fans spiralling with surprise shoutout”, published on 14 September, mentioned that the singer’s purported photo wearing Pakistan’s cricket team jersey had fooled many fans. The article included the original photo of the singer from her Instagram account that showed her wearing a plain white T-shirt.

On her verified Instagram profile, Lipa posted the original (archive) photo (seventh image in the carousel) on 29 August which shows her in a white T-shirt. When compared, her pose and the background in the Instagram image match the image in the claim. Only her T-shirt is originally white, and she is not wearing the Pakistan cricket team’s jersey.

The visual below shows a comparison between the edited photo and the original image.

On the left is the altered image from the claim. On the right is the original photo posted by Dua Lipa on her Instagram profile.

Soch Fact Check, therefore, concludes that the image of Dua Lipa wearing a green jersey is altered.
