“Big relief for the awaam as the govt decreases electricity prices by 1 paisa per unit! The federal government has decided to reduce electricity prices under fuel price adjustment. Approval granted for a reduction of Rs. 0.01 per unit in electricity tariffs. Relief expected for consumers amid rising inflation and utility costs.”

[Translation: People who consume 22 units will save 2 whole rupees. Be happy everybody!]
Fact or Fiction?
Soch Fact Check visited the website of National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), the official body responsible for regulating the electric power sector in Pakistan, and looked through the “News” tab to find such an update but couldn’t find any.
A search for credible news reports about providing relief to power consumers led to an article published by Dawn on 6 May 2026, titled “Power consumers to get Rs1.75 per unit relief over next three months.” According to the report, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has called for a public hearing on 19 May. The regulatory authority is arranging the meeting at the request of former WAPDA distribution companies (Discos) as they have sought a refund of Rs 63.94 billion for consumers under the mechanism of quarterly tariff adjustment (QTA). If the adjustment comes through, consumers will get a relief of Rs1.75 per unit for three billing months in 2026, from June till August.
Other news outlets like Dunya News, The Nation, and The Daily Times also reported the same development.
Soch Fact Check reverted back to NEPRA’s website and found the notification issued for the hearing.

NEPRA calls for a hearing regarding quarterly adjustments on 6 May 2026
Neither the news reports nor NEPRA claimed that consumers will get a relief of Rs 0.01 i.e. 1 paisa on electricity prices. Instead, there is a chance that a relief of Rs 1.75 per unit for the next three months may be announced.
