Claim: Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Field Marshal, has been declared the greatest army chief of the 21st century and ranked among the most influential military leaders of the 21st century by an international report.

Fact: No report has been found that declared Asim Munir the greatest army chief of the 21st century or ranked him among the most influential military leaders of the 21st century.

On 16 April 2026, a user on Facebook posted an image (archive) of Pakistan Field Marshal Asim Munir and captioned the image, “ ‘Asim Munir declared the greatest army chief of the 21st century, an international report claims,’ — a statement stirring debate and strong reactions across Pakistan, with opinions varying widely on leadership and performance.”

Posts of a similar nature were made around the same time with another Facebook post (archive) posting an image of the Field Marshal and captioning it, “A recent report circulating online has claimed that Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Field Marshal, has been ranked among the most influential mil!tary leaders of the 21st century.”

Fact or Fiction?

We investigated the claim as the posts did not cite any specific publication or source. A keyword search conducted by Soch Fact Check did not lead to any credible international report or publication that reported that Asim Munir was ranked as either the greatest army chief of the 21st century or among the most influential military leaders of the 21st century.

Soch Fact Check further combed through any announcements related to such reports on government press release pages, such as on Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) website, the official media wing of the Pakistan Armed Forces, as well as the Pakistan Army’s official page, and found no press releases or official announcements referencing any such report or ranking. Additionally, the Director General of the ISPR, Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry posted no news of such a report on his official X account. If such a report were true these channels would almost certainly have publicised any legitimate international recognition of this nature.

While Pakistan Field Marshal Asim Munir has been widely celebrated as “Trump’s favourite Field Marshal” as reported by Al Jazeera and as a leading political force in Pakistan, noted as “the most powerful person in his country’s government” by Foreign Policy. He has not been ranked by any publication as the greatest army chief of the 21st century or among the most influential military leaders of the 21st century. Thus, we find these claims to be false.

Conclusion: No report has been found that declared Asim Munir the greatest army chief of the 21st century or ranked him among the most influential military leaders of the 21st century. No such ranking was corroborated or reported by any credible news outlet, official publication or the Pakistani military’s own official media wing, ISPR.
