Air India flight AI-171

On 12 June 2025, Air India flight AI-171 crashed moments after takeoff from the city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat. The aircraft, en route to London’s Gatwick airport, was carrying 242 passengers when it crashed into the hostel of a nearby medical college. According to the latest reports, only one passenger survived, and the total death toll from the incident has risen to 270, including casualties from the aircraft and on the ground. Authorities have launched an investigation to ascertain why the aircraft, which was in the air for less than 40 seconds, suffered such a sudden crash.

Fact or Fiction?

To confirm whether the video actually showed footage from inside the Air India flight, we conducted a reverse-image search of its keyframes. Our search revealed that the video surfaced on multiple social media platforms as early as 16 January 2023, as was seen in posts on Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and Dailymotion. These posts claimed the video actually recorded the last moments of a passenger before a plane crashed in Nepal.

This prompted us to conduct a Google search with the keywords “Nepal plane crash 2023 passenger video”, which led us to reports from Al Arabiya, CNN, and Al Jazeera which confirmed the event.

On 15 January 2023, Flight 691 of Yeti Airlines crashed in Pokhara, Nepal, killing all 72 of its passengers. The video, as reported by multiple outlets, was filmed by passenger Soni Jaiswal, and showed the final moments of passengers inside the aircraft.

Both Al Arabiya and Al Jazeera published the same video as that in the claim and identified the passenger, while CNN shared an edited version of the video that did not show the passenger for privacy purposes.  CNN did, however, identify the passenger as Jaiswal and confirm the veracity of the video based on geolocation, a flight manifest, and information on the Yeti Airlines website.

Below is a comparison of the frames shared by these news sources and a frame of the video in the claim:

As can be seen above, the person filming the video in the claim is the same person in the videos shared by Al Arabiya and Al Jazeera. Hence, the video in the claim does not show footage from inside the Air India flight AI-171 that crashed on 12 June 2025; it actually shows the crash of Yeti Airlines Flight 691.

Virality

On Threads, the post has amassed 642K views.

On Instagram, the claim was shared here, here, and here.

On Facebook, the claim was shared here.

Conclusion: The video in the claim is not from Air India flight AI-171; it actually shows the last moments of passengers on Yeti Airlines flight 691, before it crashed in Pokhara, Nepal, on 15 January 2023.
