Claim: India has officially surrendered and accepted its defeat in the war with Pakistan.

Fact: India did not make any such statements. Comments by a top Indian Army officer about reciprocal military deescalation have been misrepresented.

On 10 May 2025, X user @_faridkhan posted (archive) a video of Colonel Sofiya Qureshi — an officer from the Indian Army’s Corps of Signals — addressing a press conference. It was accompanied by the following caption:

“Breaking News: India officially surrenders and accepts defeat in war 🇮🇳🚨 Pakistan Zindabad. Allahu Akbar 🇵🇰❤️❤️❤️”

Fact or Fiction?

Soch Fact Check reached out to an Indian fact-checker at an IFCN-accredited organisation for assistance in translating Col Qureshi’s comments from Hindi to English.

Roughly translated, the Indian Army officer said that they gave a “befitting reply” to Pakistan and caused “losses to Pakistan”.

“Considering that more and more soldiers of the Pakistan Army are being deployed on the border areas, it shows that they have the intention to escalate the situation. The Indian armed forces are capable and we are ready for any situation. So far, we have given a befitting response to all the acts by the Pakistani Army. Indian armed forces repeat that they do not want any escalation in the situation, provided Pakistan also deescalates.”

Using this, Soch Fact Check scoured other media sources, such as ABC News and CNN, and compiled the following translation:

“The Indian Army responded effectively to Pakistan and caused extensive damage to Pakistan. Pakistan Army troops have been observed moving into forward areas, indicating their intent to further escalate the tensions. Indian armed forces remain in a high state of operational readiness. All hostile actions have been effectively countered and responded appropriately. Indian armed forces reiterate their commitment to non-escalation, provided it is reciprocated by the Pakistan military.”

Col Qureshi made the comments on the afternoon of 10 May. Nowhere did she say that India was “surrendering” or “accepting defeat in [the] war” with Pakistan. The Indian fact-checker we spoke to also made the same observation.

Moreover, the post by @_faridkhan has been sourced from another user, @mugheesali81, who originally wrote:

“🚨 پاکستان کے فوجیوں کی ڈپلوومنٹ بڑھتی دکھائی دے رہی ہے، بھارت مزید کشیدگی نہیں چاہتا بشرطیکہ پاکستان بھی کشیدگی کم کرے، بھارتی حکام۔۔۔!!!
[🚨 The deployment of Pakistani troops seems to be increasing, India does not want further tensions provided that Pakistan also reduces the tensions, Indian officials [say]…!!!]”

This caption appears to be the accurate translation of Col Qureshi’s comments. It seems that it was X user @_faridkhan who misrepresented the statements made in the video, which subsequently went viral on different social media platforms.

Separately, on the evening of 10 May, a ceasefire was announced by US President Donald Trump, who wrote on his Truth Social platform:

“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Trump’s announcement came after US State Secretary Marco Rubio spoke separately to Pakistan Army Chief Gen Syed Asim Munir, Pakistani Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, and Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

The ceasefire between the two nuclear-armed neighbours was confirmed by Dar, who wrote: “Pakistan and India  have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!”

India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri also confirmed the same, saying his country and Pakistan would “stop all firing and military action on land, air, and sea” with effect from 5 pm IST, or 4:30 pm PKT.

In an X post, Jaishankar wrote, “India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action. India has consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so.”

Shortly afterwards, CNN reported quoting an Indian source that the ceasefire was “worked out ‘directly between’ India and Pakistan, despite US President Donald Trump’s announcement that the ceasefire was the result of a night of US mediation”. The same was said by Misri and New Delhi’s Ministry of Information.

On the other hand, Pakistan has expressed gratitude to the US, with PM Sharif thanking Trump “for his leadership and proactive role”, as well as Vice President JD Vance and Rubio “for their valuable contributions for peace in South Asia”.

Soch Fact Check, therefore, concludes that the claim is false.

Virality

Soch Fact Check also found the claim shared here, here, here, here, and here on Facebook.

Conclusion: India did not make any such statements. Comments by a top Indian Army officer about reciprocal military deescalation have been misrepresented.
