6 February 2021: President Arif Alvi promulgates The Elections (Amendment) Ordinance 2021, which states that the poll for Senate elections will be held by open and identifiable ballot “in case the Supreme Court of Pakistan gives an opinion … that elections for the members of the Senate do not fall within the purview of Article 226 of the Constitution”. The ordinance further states that ECP will show ballot papers of party members to their party leader should they request to see them.

Parliament not being in session is cited as being justifiable circumstances for promulgating this legislation without its approval.
